The black or white lines on the tallis are either for beauty or to remind us of the תכלת. The general minhag is for Ashkenazim to wear a tallis with black lines and for Sephardim to wear one with white lines. This is a hiddur and one still fulfills the Mitzvah with any color on his tallis.
