By R’ Chaim Zev Lemberger
One day Reb Chaim was driving down the parkway and boom he got a flat tire. So he pulled over to the side and called AAA and he waited for someone to come help him. A while later a car pulled up and this big hulking older Italian looking gentleman jumped out and got to fixing the tire. As they were talking Joe tells him you know I used to be a cop in Williamsburg I used to hang out in Satmer I know all about you guys. Very nice says Reb Chaim and they speak a little more the tire is taken care of and as Joe is ready to get back into his car he says rabbi can I ask you something? Yes says Reb Chaim, is it true that 2000 years ago you guys had a temple that was destroyed and you guys are waiting for it to be rebuilt and you guys cry over it all the time? Yes he says, and is it true that if you guys all just got along it will be rebuilt? Yes he says, so Joe looks at him and says so why don’t you guys just get along?! We all know that we are still in this גלות because of שנאת חנם, the חפץ חיים says in his seforim tens of times that this is the main reason we are still in גלות and until we rectify it we won’t be redeemed. But I have a question we don’t have שנאת חנם this generation has more חסד and more צדקה than ever there is an organization for everything there are countless gemachs there is so much money being given out, it can’t be there is שנאת חנם? The answer is שנאת חנם doesn’t mean חסד you can be the biggest בעל חסד and asken and still be full of שנאת חנם. How do I know? The gemarah says the second בית המקדש that they were עוסק in Torah and chessed why was the בית המקדש destroyed? Answers the gemarah שנאת חנם, so it must be they are 2 different things. But what does that mean what does שנאת חנם mean if it doesn’t mean being not nice to someone else? My Rebbi Reb Meir Warshager explained as follows, why is it that we dislike any person who is a little different from us. If you think about it all day we walk around thinking about other people, and how they are constantly irking us, they are bothering us just by them being them. Let me give you a few examples, when we are in shul how many times do we get bothered by others because the way they look, the way they stand, put on their tallis, their hat, they space out, they talk, they daven loud, quiet, they shake too much, too little, we get upset that they do things differently. Why does it bother us? Even if we say they are doing something wrong, not like shulchan aruch , why does it bother us? The answer is שנאת חנם that is שנאת חנם! There is no reason for it but we don’t want them to be different even though our differences make us who we are but still it irks us it bothers us until it gets to a שנאה we don’t even realize it, but think about it for a minute who bothers us every random person for no reason other than they irk us they bother us. Someone once told me he really can’t stand so and so, why he doesn’t know but he just can’t stand him, his being bothers him that is שנאת חנם our entire being reeks of שנאת חנם. That’s what this goy Joe asked Reb Chaim. Why can’t you guys just get along? It’s a great question, if the בית המקדש means that much to us we would do anything to get it back? But if we don’t even realize the issue then we can’t try to fix, it if we walk around saying we don’t have שנאת חנם, then we can learn שמירת הלשון and make מחסום לפי and open a gemach and run the biggest chessed organization and still be full of שנאת חנם. רבנו יונה says that we need to remove שנאה from ourselves. Askes Reb Chatzkel why remove it? It should say its אסור and we can’t have it? Must be he answers that this is part of us, this middah is a part of our makeup and we need to work to remove it. So what to do I don’t know but the first step is to know what the issue is so that way we can try to fix it.
Hatzlacha Rabah!!
